Conference on culture and transcendence
CONFERENCE ON CULTURE AND TRANSCENDENCE
VU University Amsterdam 28-29 October 2010

Call for Papers
VISOR (VU Institute for the Study of Religion, Culture and Society) is organizing a conference on Culture and Transcendence, with the support of the National Research Foundation of South Africa.

The theme of the conference is transcendence in Western culture in the 20th century. Forty scholars in philosophy, theology and aesthetics have been invited to present papers. The keynote speakers are David Jaspers (Glasgow), Merold Westphal (New York) and Werner Schlüsser (Trier).

We invite interested parties to contribute papers in the areas of philosophy of culture and philosophy of religion, political philosophy, theology and aesthetics (literature, film, music). A position paper elucidating four different types of transcendence is the starting point for the conference, and scholars can elaborate on examples of the different types of transcendence as described in that paper. The four types of transcendence can also be corrected or supplemented. 30 minutes are allotted for each paper (20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes discussion). Papers should be no more than 2000 words.
It is the intention to publish a volume of selected papers after the conference; the papers included in this volume are to be no more than 5000 words each.
The fee for participation in the conference is 100 Euros; this includes coffee/tea, lunches and the conference dinner. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and accommodation.

Those wishing to participate are asked to submit an abstract of their proposed paper for consideration by the conference organizers. The position paper can be obtained upon request from Hester Brink
(hester.brink@gmail.com). Abstracts are to be submitted at the above address no later than 1 June 2010.

Prof. dr. Wessel Stoker (Aesthetics)
